MR GAY CANADA

September 18-21, 2008 Vancouver-Whistler

Imagine…
Meet great men from across the country and international guests while residing at the lavish facilities of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, located in the middle of one of the world’s top resorts; dine at fine places that the Village has to offer and taste rare wines from BC and abroad; all Mr. Gay Canada delegates will have the experience of a lifetime! Photo shoots include playing in the shallow waters and sandy beach of Lost Lake – a favourite location, secluded, yet not too far from the Village, surrounded by lush evergreen forests and mountain views in the distance. Three incredible days complete with bar-hoping in Vancouver and Whistler, Eco Challenge on one of the mountain tops and lounging in the greatest spa facilities the West Coast of Canada has to offer. And, Mr. Gay Canada is…

The Mr. Gay Canada Competition is a 3-day, indoor/outdoor series of events to help our judges identify a strong spokesman or Ambassador to tell the world about our mission. The Competition includes physical tests and interviews with a panel of judges. Only 15% of the judging points are assigned to appearance, which means 85% of the points are for qualities other than appearance.

The 2008 Mr. Gay Canada competition final will be held in Vancouver-Whistler from September 18 to 21.

Mr. Gay Canada Mission

The primary purpose of the Mr. Gay Canada (MGC) is to identify leaders who will take responsibility not only in his own community but on a global stage speaking out for equal rights. MGC is a positive role model and will work on humanizing being gay in the media both queer and mainstream.

We want to prove that “gay is not a stereotype.” So, we’re looking for all types of guys. Seriously! Okay, so you probably think you need a pink boa and attitude to sport a sash competitively, but really we’re in search of everyday guys from gym-bunny to math geek with a passion to lead.
Sure, six-packs are hot, but so are great smiles, sparkling personalities and funny, down-to-earth guys. We get dozens of applications from guys with headshots that are fast on their way to being the bitchy gay guy on reality TV. What we’re really looking for are the future leaders of the gay community. You don’t have to be up on a float in the gay pride parade in a pair of Speedos and body glitter to stand out in our eyes. We like regular guys who want to make a contribution by being outstanding in whatever they do in their everyday life—the unassuming average Joe who just may be spectacular precisely because he will inevitably say “this is not my thing.”

The Mr. Gay CANADA Competition is especially concerned with gay men being viewed as the “other,” as outsiders to the rest of the world. Humans have a natural propensity to distrust “the other” and tend to project negative feelings away from themselves. The media has easily established the ‘gay stereotype’ – quick, think of what it is in your mind – and we know that limited image does not represent all of us.

We have for too long allowed society, especially the media, to label us only by our extremes, painting ‘us’ as the ‘other’ and, thereby, pitting us against ‘them.’ We seek guys who don’t shout-out their membership in the ‘other’ groups or provide easy targets for society’s hatred. Our activism is much more subtle. We feel that gay men who excel at school, sports, the arts, or in their careers demonstrate to the world the ability and humanity of gay men. Our contestants excel in their everyday lives beyond the gayborhood. They are Mr. Gay Canada because already they have unknowingly established themselves as a face of the gay community to the rest of the world.

The winner of the Canadian Competition will go on to the International Mr. Gay Competition where guys from over 20 different countries will compete for the title of International Mr. Gay. This all goes down in Hollywood in early 2009 (TBC). If you think you’ve got what it takes and want to make a contribution to the gay community then, get in touch today!

We are happy to discuss the Competition with you, answer all of your questions and work with you to build your file for consideration by our preliminary contest producers.
